If you are looking for a new movie to catch for date night or something that the whole family can watch, look no further; “The Lost Holliday” is the perfect movie for you.
On Wednesday 25th, hundreds of supporters filled the seats at the AMC Magic Johnson Theatre in Harlem to get an early screening of the film. The theatre was full of laughs, cries, and overall good energy as the audience witnessed the storyline unfold.
As the director, writer, and star of the film, Jussie Smollett eloquently tells the story of Cassandra Marshall, who is played by the legendary Vivica A Fox, who travels to Los Angeles to help plan her estranged son, Damien, who is played by Jabari Redd, funeral. While on her trip she is faced with having to learn the life of her son that she never knew and had to make tough decisions that supported the wishes of her son and his family.
This heartwarming film explores the themes of family dynamics, friendships, fatherhood, grief, love, adoption, and marriage. It celebrates the love within a LGBTQ+ marriage and lifestyle and shows the growth of representation and acceptance.
On the red carpet, Vivica Fox expressed, “The story is about discovery, rejection, acceptance, love, and family in that order. The role of Cassandra was a role that I absolutely couldn’t turn down. Jussie wrote the role for me and it’s a trip, here we are. It’s premiere week and I am super excited. The love that we have received for The Lost Holliday has been impeccable. I’m excited for everyone to finally have an opportunity to see the film”.
Mona Scott-Young, one of the producers of the film stated, “I am very proud of this project. It’s a beautiful story and I am excited to see everyone’s reactions. This project was a collaborative effort. I often say this was a labor of love mainly because we did this independently. We came together because Jussie had co-written this incredible story with Jerrell Chesney and they had a vision for how they wanted to see it play out. We have to continue to put these types of projects on the screen. That’s the only way we are going to be able to create opportunities for other content creators and for those who want to be upfront and behind the camera. It’s about getting and giving support”.
Vivica A Fox, Mona Scott-Young, and Jussie Smollett have been in this industry for a very long time and have each contributed to historic moments that have pushed our culture forward. We got the chance to catch up with them on the carpet and this is what they had to say after being asked,
If you could title this chapter of your life, what would you call it and why?
Vivica A Fox: This chapter of my life is absolutely amazing. The opportunities. The roles. My spirit. Everything is absolutely wonderful.
Mona Scott-Young: I would call it “Second Lives Club” only because for me reinvention, evolution, constantly moving, changing, and growing is a big part of who I am as a person. This summer I did something completely outside of what I have done in a very long time. I went back to my musical roots and produced some tours and I was out there on the bus crossing the country. I had “Queens of R&B Tour” with Xscape and SWV. Then I had “Out of This World Tour” with Missy, Busta, and Ciara. So that was a complete departure from the television shows that I have been making for the past 13 years. We shot this movie a year ago and I am here again now on the road promoting it. It’s about constantly challenging yourself and I am very excited.
Jussie Smollett: “JOY”. That is what I am here to experience. That is what I am here to try to create for other people. So, that’s always been a goal of mine and that’s what I’ve tried to do for every piece that I have created. Life is about being kind and I hope we are kind back to it.
