It’s officially summertime and if you are not outside catching a tan then you are inside cuddled up trying to catch the latest movie releases. If you are looking for something new to watch, look no further because BET+ has some phenomenal movies coming out all summer long.
On Wednesday, June 28th, at the AMC Magic Johnson Theater a star-studded lineup of superstars attended a movie premiere and red carpet event for BET+’s original movie “Call Her King”.
“Call Her King” was written and directed by Wes Miller who perfectly executed a storyline that was relatable and told in a way for everyone to understand and connect with what is happening in the world around us. At the beginning of the evening, Miller stated, “I became a filmmaker to tell stories, to entertain, and to touch hearts. The world is a tough place and it’s nice to be able to be entertained but also walk away with a little bit of something to think about at the end. I want to thank the support of my family. This requires a lot of sacrifice but it’s always ultimately worth it and at the end of the day we do it for you guys.”

Director Wes Miller, selected two icons, Naturi Naughton (Power Book II: Ghost) and Lance Gross (House of Payne) to play the leading roles and they did not disappoint. Jason Mitchell, Tobias Truvillion, Nicholas Turturro, Garrett Hendricks, Johnny Mesner, and Shiobann Amisial are also starring in the movie and delivered remarkable performances.
“Call Her King” is an action-packed movie that is centered on the many injustices that people of color and other disadvantaged minorities face in the legal system. It follows the story of Judge Jaeda King (Naughton) who has sentenced Sean Samuels, played by Jason Mitchell, to death for a crime that he was found guilty of. His brother Gabriel (Gross) hijacks the courthouse in his brothers’ honor to prove his innocence and ultimately has a goal to get to the truth. This is a story that many of us are all too familiar with. Current day history has proved time after time that there are innocent people who are facing jail time and or people of color who have received harsh and ridiculous punishments for the same crime that was committed by their counterparts. When asked about their favorite part of making the movie, Gross explained that it was not only working with this talented cast but also what this movie is about. Gross stated, “It’s a conversation piece because there are flaws in the legal and justice system.” To go against the system, more stories like this should be put on front street to aid us in the right direction for justice.
At the end of the evening, it was great to see the cast stand together and share their experiences.
“Thank you guys for being here. This is a labor of love and I’m so honored to have been able to do a film like this. The part that was amazing for me and that I enjoyed the most was being able to kick some m***** f****** a**. No, but it was really fun to learn the different styles of fight and gun training. It was intense because I was also six weeks pregnant but I had a supportive group. It was hard work but really rewarding. I am honored and proud to work with all these amazing people.” Naughton
