On a cold and chilly day, November 26, at Sankofa Haus in the Bronx, New York City residents gathered in a small and cozy room awaiting the arrival of former state assemblyman and former aide to the Obama administration, Michael Blake to announce his campaign run for the Mayor of New York City.

If you are a New Yorker you should already be aware of all the issues that the people of the city are facing. From the severe amount of violence, battles in the education system, fare increases, immigration policies, the spike in homelessness, and of course we can’t forget that currently Mayor Adams, is battling his own legal issues, we are truly in a space of uncertainty. The time for change is now and the people of New York City have the chance to elect someone that will hear our needs and concerns on the frontlines and make the necessary changes to heal our city.

Before Mr. Blake arrived, Activist and Chef Grace Ramirez welcomed us by stating, “Michael is not only a proven leader but also a true partner in servicing the city.”

One of the greatest misfortunes that happened nationwide was the COVID-19 Pandemic and instead of just waiting for change, Mr. Blake and his team got up and helped thousands of families and small businesses in need. Attorney Alfredo Angueira explained to the crowd not only Mr. Blake’s involvement and help during these difficult times but also the impact that it had on the community. “During the Covid-19 Pandemic, Michael Blake was instrumental in providing over a million meals to this community through his network, through his connections, and his leadership. We were able to forge connections to ensure that the people not just of The Bronx but of the city were fed”.

It was time for Michael Blake to walk to the podium and the people of the city were ready to receive him. Mr. Blake delivered a strong and passionate speech that reassured us that he is and will forever be for the people. He spoke about the state of our city and the steps that needed to happen for effective change to happen. He spoke about his upbringing and all of the monumental connections that he has to the city. More importantly, he spoke about some of the policies that he will implement from day one if he gets elected into office.

“First and foremost we have to Universal Childcare. We are recognizing over and over again that families are struggling to pay their bills. They are struggling with how to make it. There is no good reason why we don’t have childcare policies across the city. In addition, we have to reimburse our nonprofits faster. When we think about what’s happening right now every single day, nonprofits are doing the work but they are waiting weeks, months, and sometimes years before they are getting repaid for the work that they are doing in their communities”.

To finish us off, Mr. Blake stood tall and announced his candidacy.

I stand before you and say that I am a Reverend Michael Alexander Blake, son of The Bronx, son of New York City Public Schools, Child of God, Child of Jamaican immigrants, former assembly member, former DNC vice-chair, former White House Aide to President Obama, current small business owner, current democracy freedom fighter, and I announce my candidacy for Mayor of New York City!

We wish Michael Blake the greatest luck in his run to becoming the next Mayor of New York City.
