The one thing that will forever get me ready for work or a girl’s night out is music. Rumor has it; that a girl can take hours and hours to get ready if she plays the right songs on her playlist. Well, well, well on my playlist I am listening to the Grammy Award-winning R&B superstar CoCo Jones. Since her hit record “ICU”, CoCo Jones has been able to make a name for herself and has proven that when she hits the stage, her mic is always on.

Outside of being a mind-blowing singer, you can catch her on the screen if you are watching Bel-Air or more recently if you were in New York City during fashion week, you saw her sitting front row dressed to the “nines” from head to toe. CoCo Jones has captured the eyes of so many people from around the world. The ladies either want to be just like her and the fellas have had her on their mood boards, if you know what I mean.

Even though I am a Bronx native, CoCo Jones announced on Instagram that on Saturday 21, she would be in Williamsburg Brooklyn with the Sanitation Foundation for their Great Broadway Sweep kickoff event and immediately I knew I had to sign up.

Saturday we were blessed with terrific weather and as volunteers poured into LaGuardia Playground, DJ Creatrx set the tone by playing the most up-to-beat beats that made the registration process easy as 1, 2, 3. Before the clean-up started Julie Raskin, the Executive Director of the Sanitation Foundation greeted everyone and told us how and why today was so important. She informed us that, “as a nonprofit organization we raise all of our money. We cannot do this without our sponsors and donors”. The purpose of the Sanitation Foundation is to create opportunities for people in our communities to participate in making a cleaner and healthier neighborhood in which they live in across all five boroughs. To start the 2nd Annual Great Broadway Sweep, it was only right to bring out the princess of R&B CoCo Jones to get more involved in cleaning the streets of Brooklyn, especially since her new hit record is called “Sweep It Up”.

As the clean-up got started, CoCo Jones addressed everyone who came out and shared her gratitude.

“I just want to say thank you guys so much for doing your part to help the world. I have volunteered all through my life so it is a real passion of mine to put the focus on other things and really give back your time. Time is so valuable. I really commend all of you guys here. I have a song called, Sweep It Up, so I am taking it very literal and I’m excited to help you guys clean up the city”.

As we walked through the streets of Brooklyn picking up trash, it was great to see the people in the community smiling with appreciation. Overall, this experience was extremely humbling and we knew we was making a huge impact in the community. At the end of our route, organizer, Johar James stated, “Today went extremely well. It’s great to have CoCo Jones to come along with us on a route. It’s definitely not every day that a Grammy Award-winning superstar singer takes the initiative and feels so passionate about her neighborhood. She lives in this neighborhood when she is in New York and it’s great to have her come out and take part in it. All of the volunteers were excited and the people who saw her on the street were excited to see her. It’s really awesome. We got a lot of trash off the street. Anytime you can pick up trash no matter how little or big – it’s a great day.

If you or someone that you know wants to volunteer, it is not too late. You can head over to the Sanitation Foundation website and sign up.
