It comes as no surprise that in 2023 women have proven that they are a force to be reckoned with in the music industry. They are not holding back and have demonstrated that they have something powerful to say and will be heard. As the summer’s temperature continues to be on the rise, female artists have grabbed hold of the musical airwaves and have dominated the charts.
Earlier this week, St. Louis rapper and singer Big Boss Vette came to New York City to celebrate with her “cousins” the release of her debut EP, Resilience via Beatstaz/Amigo Records/Republic Records. Earlier in her career, Vette became a viral sensation star after releasing a series of anthems including "Outside" and "Snatched" and now is setting TikTok on fire racking in over 2 billion views with one of her latest hit "Pretty Girl Walk". Her supporters, who Vette calls “cousins”, poured into Republic Records to share this incredible achievement in her career. Styled by Dorian Jihad, Vette was serving us with looks, body, personality, and grace. Female rappers BreezyLYN, Maiya The Donn, and Steph G were in attendance and showed how important it is to stand together as women in this business.
She is talented, she is beautiful, and she is authentically herself. During an intimate and well eloquent conversation hosted by Erica Hamilton, Vette started by using these words to describe herself. If you didn’t know Vette before this evening, you got the chance to get a deeper look into her life on a much more personal level. We sat together, laughed together, and cried together but ultimately got the opportunity to truly know who Vette is as a person and as an artist.

If you take a close look at the cover of RESILIENCE, you are hit with powerful statements such as “Anxiety didn’t win. Depression didn’t win. The hate didn’t win. Thank You for getting us through it.” Most of the time we as humans think that we are alone and have to keep these feelings inside of us but we don’t. Vette took a risk by showing her vulnerable side with this cover but the truth is that she has already helped many people get through tough times in their lives and is an example of what it looks like when you have reached the other side.
Some people tend to think that Vette had overnight success but that isn’t the case and her journey has landed her to be exactly where she needs to be. Vette described her journey by stating,
“So, I originally went viral back in 2014. I was broke and I was in high school. I had done a cover to DeJ Loaf’s “Try Me” beat and literally it went viral and I didn’t know what to do with the success because I was still broke. I didn’t have management or guidance. I just had ME. I continuously dropped covers back to back and in 2015 I lost somebody that was very close to me and it sent me down a dark path. I was outside fighting and in so much drama. I basically was a crash dummy. In 2016, on her one-year death anniversary, I got shot and that was a wake-up call for me. In 2019, I got back in the studio and started dropping real covers and they started booking me again. I was driving 14 hours for 700 dollars but I was doing any and everything so I can make it because this is for me.”
Whenever anyone is going through life-altering events, it will most definitely feel amazing when you not only get through it but use it as motivation to become successful. When asked what would Vette say to her younger self, it was evident that she was overwhelmed with emotion. “You were destined. You were meant to be big. You were meant to be here.”
Yes, indeed Vette you were meant to be here and RESILIENCE is a stepping-stone to all the positive energy that is coming your way. We are all excited about what’s next for you but cherish and live in this moment because you deserve it all cousin.
